SM202 FAQs

  • Q: What is SafetyMate?
A:SafetyMate is a talking first aid tool for infant and baby safety that includes emergency instructions on choking, bleeding, seizure, burn, breathing, CPR, poison, bone injury, falls, bite, stings and convulsions. A lightweight, handheld device, SafetyMate talks the caretaker through step-by-step first aid procedures. Families and new mothers can now have peace of mind knowing that this valuable information is immediately and easily available to them – whenever and wherever it’s needed. SafetyMate’s instructions come from internationally-accepted guidelines so mom and dad can know that the information is accurate. Simply open the lid and SafetyMate begins speaking. Select one of the blinking buttons and SafetyMate guides you to the most important information first. By asking yes/no questions, SafetyMate offers the proper steps of care based on the specific scenario. As always, if there is an actual emergency, call your local emergency response number immediately.
  • Q: Who should use SafetyMate?
A: SafetyMate is for everyone. SafetyMate refreshes you on what to do during an actual medical emergency. The information in SafetyMate complements the First Aid and CPR information taught by American Heart Association and other leading training organizations. SafetyMate offers the opportunity to refresh your skills at any time and in any location, and reminds you what to do in the case of an actual emergency.
  • Q: Is SafetyMate designed to handle all types of emergencies?
A: While no one product can cover all potential emergencies, SafetyMate is designed to handle the most common types of emergencies through a diversified family of products. Designed specifically for home use, SafetyMate for the New Parent contains instructions for the most common household emergencies including seizure, convulsion, choking, bleeding, burns, bone injury, falls, breathing, poison, bite, stings and CPR.
  • Q: Why is there a need for SafetyMate?
A: Kids hurt themselves every day. Our 911 system is notoriously overloaded. What if it took emergency personnel a long time to get to you? What if you were out of cell range with your kids and something went wrong? You would want to know what to do. SafetyMate provides a tool to help you refresh your knowledge about what to do in case of an actual emergency. It’s super lightweight and hand-held, so you can take it with you…just in case.
  • Q: I was trained in CPR, isn’t that enough?
A: Research shows that basic CPR skills are quickly lost following CPR class instruction. Within weeks of training, many people no longer remember what to do. Besides CPR, SafetyMate covers many other medical issues – and provides a great way to learn how to help your child, lessen his or her stress, and give you peace of mind. As a parent, taking care of your child is your number one priority. We understand that and want to provide you with an easy-to-use tool to help you keep your baby safe.
  • Q: How does SafetyMate work?
A: SafetyMate features clearly labeled Emergency Information Buttons with headings such as CPR/Unconscious, Choking/Breathing, Allergic Reaction, and more. To get started, just open the lid, press one of the blinking Emergency Information buttons and SafetyMate will begin to provide information. To respond when SafetyMate asks a question, simply press the green YES or red NO button. If you need to hear the question again, press the REPEAT button. Starting the information again is as easy as pressing the RESUME button. And there’s a PAUSE button, too!
  • Q: I don’t know if I will be able to do what SafetyMate tells me to do.
A: SafetyMate provides verbal, easy-to-understand information about how best to help your child or even another adult if s/he got injured. Rather than leaf through a First Aid/CPR Manual, wouldn’t you rather hear what to do? SafetyMate offers you the opportunity to practice with the whole family! It’s written to approximately a 4th - 6th grade level so nearly everyone can understand it and follow the instructions. You can get your older children involved as well!

In some cases, SafetyMate tells what NOT to do that could potentially cause further injury. In all cases, it is no different than what professional first responders would advise you to do if they were there coaching you. By following these instructions, it is very possible that you can prevent more serious injury to your child. In all cases, the first thing to do is phone 911 or your emergency response number to alert professional help.

  • Q: What batteries are used in SafetyMate?
A: SafetyMate is design to use 4-AA batteries. Included with your SafetyMate are 4-AA long-life Duracell batteries.  If you would like to use rechargeable batteries with your SafeyMate, you must purchase the SM955 Recharging Kit, which includes 4-AA NiMH rechargeable batteries, a charging cradle, 120/240V AC Adapter, and a 12V DC vehicle recharging cable for charging at home, while traveling or in the car.  Check with your retailer, or you may order the SM955 on our website, HERE (add link).
  • Q: How long do the batteries last?
A: Actual battery life will vary with many factors, including the type of batteries used, how often the device is used, how loud it is used, and length and frequency of recharging cycles (if using SM955 Recharging Kit).  Here are some guidelines for expected battery life (your actual experience will vary).
Duracell Alkaline batteries shelf life - 7 years (when not installed in device)
Duracell Alkaline battery life when installed in SafetyMate - 6 months minimum (we recommended testing the device periodically to insure battery condition, and replacing alkaline batteries every 6 months, or when a Low Battery warning is evident).
NiMH batteries (when using SM955 Recharging kit) - Once fully charged (8 hours minimum), batteries should last approximately 1 month minimum in normal use before recharging is necessary.  When using the Recharging Kit and NiMH batteries, we recommend keeping SafetyMate in the charging cradle when not being used, so it is fully charged and available for use when needed. SafetyMate is designed so it is OK to have SafetyMate recharging full time (24/7) when using the SM955 Recharging Kit.
  • Q: How do I know the batteries are low?
A: SafetyMate provides several audible and visual Low Battery warnings.  When a low battery is detected during use, SafetyMate will provide a spoken warning: "Warning, Battery Low."  It will also intermittently "chirp" and blink the RED LED Low Battery indicator on the front of the device (between the YES/NO keys). These are indications that the batteries need replacement (if using alkaline batteries) or recharging (if using NiMH batteries).
  • Q: Can I recharge alkaline batteries?
A  NO! ALKALINE BATTERIES ARE NOT CAPABLE OF BEING RECHARGED. TRYING TO DO SO PRESENTS A RISK OF FIRE OR BATTERY EXPLOSION. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RECHARGE ALKALINE BATTERIES. FOR RECHARGING, USE ONLY THE NIMH BATTERIES INCLUDED IN THE SM955 RECHARGING KIT.
  • Q: I notice a GREEN blinking LED on the front of SafetyMate. What does this mean?
A: When SafetyMate is in the charging cradle and connected to a voltage source, the battery LED on the front of the device will periodically blink GREEN, indicating the SafetyMate is charging.  If this LED is NOT blinking, then the SafetyMate is NOT charging and your connections to power should be checked.
  • Q: Is SafetyMate waterproof?
A: SafetyMate is water "resistant", but not waterproof.  It is designed so it might be used in damp situations (such as rain), but is not designed to survive immersion in liquids, or prolonged exposure to damp or wet situations (such as being sprayed).  Use efforts to protect SafetyMate from becoming wet.  It is not designed for storage outdoors, or in unprotected environments.  As a sensitive electronic device, it is vulnerable to exposure to excessive moisture.
  • Q: Can SafetyMate be updated if recommended practices change?
A: Yes, SafetyMate can be updated to the latest practices. All of SafetyMate's content is contained on an internal SD FLASH Memory card, similar to those used in digital cameras and MP3 players. The SD card can be found behind a sliding door in the battery compartment. To access the SD FLASH Memory card, remove the battery compartment door, take out the batteries and slide the gray door upwards.  Check HERE (add link) on the SafetyMate website for any announcement of content updates and how to download them. You can either download updates directly from this website to a computer and then transfer these to the SD Flash Memory card or you can contact SafetyMate to purchase a new SD Flash Memory card with the updates installed.
  • Q: What is included in the SM955 Recharging Kit?
A: The SM955 Recharging Kit includes everything you need to make your SafetyMate SM200 series device a rechargeable device.  Depending on how you use SafetyMate, you may wish to keep SafetyMate recharging so it is always available for use, as opposed to using Alkaline batteries, which require regular periodic replacement.  By using the SM955 Recharging kit, SafetyMate can be constantly recharging and ready for use.

The SM955 Recharging Kit includes a charging cradle (suitable for desk or wall-mounting) to connect to SafetyMate, 4-AA NiMH batteries which replace the Alkaline batteries included with SafetyMate, a 120V/240V AC adapter that can be used at home (or abroad) to charge the SafetyMate, and a 12V vehicle charging cable that can be used to charge SafetyMate from a vehicle's 12V power outlet. Check with your retailer or you can order the SM955 Recharging Kit HERE (add link) on our website.
  • Q  Will I be liable if I use SafetyMate to help in a medical emergency?
A  Every state has enacted "Good Samaritan Laws" to protect those who use their best efforts to assist in medical emergencies from liability.  Check your state's local laws for further information about how these laws are implemented.
