The following is a list of items to check if you are having difficulty with your SafetyMate
(model SM202).
- SafetyMate does nothing (no sound, no blinking keys).
Check to make sure that the SD FLASH Memory card is properly installed. The SD card is underneath the bright orange sticker in the upper left hand corner of the original packaging. Follow the directions on the cardboard insert enclosed within the battery compartment. Open the gray sliding door at the top of the battery compartment and insert the SD Flash Memory card, using the directions on the cardboard insert as a guide. (Note: SafetyMate will not function without the SD FLASH Memory card installed containing the SafetyMate software). Insert the SD FLASH Memory card it until it "clicks" into place. Make sure you installed the SD FLASH Memory card correctly, with the contacts facing the bottom of the battery compartment. Close the sliding door.
Install 4-AA fresh Alkaline batteries. Make sure that the batteries are properly installed. The proper battery positions are indicated at the bottom of the battery compartment. Slide the battery compartment door into place. Turn the device over, open the front cover, and SafetyMate should begin operating.
If you believe the batteries are good and installed properly, but still nothing happens, check again to insure that the SD FLASH Memory card is properly installed, check the positioning of the batteries and try again.
If still no sound or blinking, please contact SafetyMate as your device may be defective.
- SafetyMate is "chirping" periodically.
This is the Low Battery warning. You should also notice a RED LED blink periodically on the front of SafetyMate. If you try to use SafetyMate, you will receive a verbal "Warning. Battery Low" announcement. If you are using alkaline batteries, replace them now with four fresh batteries.
If you are using the rechargeable NiMH batteries included in the SM955 Recharging Kit, your SafetyMate needs to be recharged. Place the SafetyMate in the SM955 charging cradle, connect the charging cradle to the AC adapter (or Vehicle cable), and plug in the AC adapter to a live outlet (or connect the Vehicle cable to a live vehicle power outlet). Charge the SafetyMate for the recommended 8 hours minimum to obtain a full charge. The GREEN LED on the front of SafetyMate will blink while charging. If the GREEN LED is not blinking periodically, check to be sure you are plugged into a live outlet. If SafetyMate does not retain the charge and begins "chirping" soon after charging, replace the NiMH batteries.
Note: If using NiMH batteries, it is OK to leave the SafetyMate connected to the charging cradle continuously. This way, it is ready and charged when needed. SafetyMate was designed with this type of use in mind.
- SafetyMate was left with the cover open and does not respond.
SafetyMate will "go to sleep" after approximately 30 minutes with the cover open and no keys pressed. This is to prevent excessive battery drain. Simply close the cover, and reopen. SafetyMate should begin working again. If not, then SafetyMate may need battery replacement or charging (see above)..
- Is my SafetyMate is functioning properly? What version of content is installed?
You can have SafetyMate perform a Diagnostic routine that checks all the LED indicators, the audio output, the key input functions, and announces the version of your SafetyMate Software. To enter Diagnostic Mode, perform the following steps.
Press and hold the CPR, Unconscious key, AND the Allergic Reaction key simultaneously for approximately 5 seconds. The device will enter Diagnostic mode and will stop speaking and begin cycling all of the LED indicators in sequence to verify operation. Check to observe that all LEDs are working. (Note: There is an LED under each of the 8 Protocol keys, plus REPEAT, PAUSE, RESUME, YES, and NO keys. There is both a RED and GREEN LED under the battery/charging indicator. There are NO LEDs under the ENGLISH/ESPAÑOL, or VOLUME keys).
Press any key to exit LED cycling, and device will emit a constant tone which is a test of the audio output and speaker to verify operation. Pressing any key will exit the audio test.
The SafetyMate will then announce its software version. Write this number down and check on this website to see if a newer version has been released. Instructions for updating the software are found HERE (add link) on this website. You can now also test the functioning of each key on the device.
Pressing any key will announce its number (1 - 8 for the Protocol selection keys), or its function (YES, NO, Pause, etc.). Check each key to confirm that it is functioning correctly.
This completes Diagnostic mode. You can return to normal operation by closing and reopening the lid. If not, the Diagnostic mode will time out automatically in approximately 30 seconds, and normal operation will resume.
- SafetyMate will not turn off when the lid is closed.
Check to be sure the small, round magnet is still attached to the inside of the lid just below the label. If this magnet is missing, SafetyMate will not turn off. Remove the batteries, and contact SafetyMate Customer Service at 949.252.1570.
- How do I charge SafetyMate in my car?
To charge SafetyMate, you must have the SM955 Recharging Kit. Install the NiMH batteries included in the SM955 kit. Place SafetyMate in the charging cradle. Connect the vehicle charging cable to the charging cradle, and plug into your vehicle's power outlet. Note: SafetyMate can ONLY be charged when it is docked in the charging cradle. We recommend charging the SafetyMate for 8 hours (minimum), and then disconnect SafetyMate from the vehicle to avoid discharging the vehicle's battery.
WARNING: If you are charging SafetyMate in your vehicle, and will not be driving the vehicle for an extended period (> 2 weeks), we suggest you UNPLUG the vehicle charging cradle to avoid discharging the vehicle battery.
